- The reason for the Cambodian Genocide was for a communist group called the Khmer Rouge to increase the population of peasants in Cambodia. The Khmer Rouge believed that peasants were hard-working, uneducated, and that they wouldn't revolt against the communist leaders. The Khmer Rouge believed that peasants were the most important part of society.
- The duration of the genocide was from 1975, when the Khmer Rouge seized power of the government, until 1978 when the Vietnamese overthrew the Khmer Rouge government. Even though the Khmer Rouge reign ended in 1978, communal unrest continued into the late 1980's.
- An estimated 1.5-1.7 million Cambodians died from overwork, execution, and starvation. The death toll was a total of 3,314,768 people.
- A second round of "purges" began in 1977. This was directed towards Vietnamese citizens. Executions became more widespread and began to affect all of Cambodia's population. 30,000 Vietnamese citizens were estimated to be killed during this time.
- Many people were tortured and killed during this horrible time. Some examples of torture were:-Muslims were forced to eat pork
-Children were taken away from their parents and forced to work in separate labor camps.
-The people who were unable to work (the ill, elderly. children, etc) were instantly killed.
-250,000 women were forcibly married: they were raped, killed, and many of them became pregnant. -Muslims were forced to eat pork - How the aggressors felt about their role in the Holocaust is that some of them felt guilty and some of them didn't care. Most of them thought of it as "just following orders" and didn't think anything else about it.
- The lives of the survivors were affected greatly because they always felt guilty that they betrayed their country and didn't do enough to save peoples life. They had nothing to do with killing all of those people but yet they all thought that is was there fault and they were responsible for the whole thing.
- How the international community responded to the genocide by pressuring Vietnam to withdraw its arm from Cambodia. It allowed the government to become restored.
